1 Why We Need to Learn Chinese Characters in Chinese?
(1)To benefit study and communication
Chinese characters play a very important role in Chinese, which is an ideographic writing language. An elementary level student can only focus on studying listening and spoken Chinese by Pinyin. However when students enter intermediate and high level Chinese study, they need to study characters. Besides, reading, shopping by internet and other daily life in China can’t go without being acquainted with characters.

(2) The requirements from HSK level 3 According to the requirements of New HSK, from level 3, the tests only use characters, so there is no Pinyin. Therefore students need to know characters to be able to meet HSK requirements. What’s more, from level 3, the tests focus on writing, so character learning becomes especially important.

2 Are Characters Difficult to Learn?

Many foreign students think Chinese characters are difficult to learn. Actually on the contrary, Chinese character are easy. Here are the reasons.
(1) The quantity of common-used characters is 600, with which a foreign student can read 80% reading material and do common communication.

(2) Chinese characters are formed by strict principles. Lacking of knowledge of the formation of characters and of good methods, some foreign students learn characters slowly. So only with right way to learn and know the principles of formation of characters and words and phrases, students can learn characters and broaden vocabularies quickly.

How many Characters should we Learn?

According to statistics, Chinese people can read common material and communicate by writing when master 2500-3000 common characters. According to The Chinese Language Status Report by Ministry of Education and the National Language Committee, there are 8225 characters appeared in media, among which, 5607 characters appeared in print media, audio media and online media. 581 characters can cover 80% of these three medias, and when the coverage reach 99%, only 2315 words appeared. If one knows 900 characters and 10000 terms or phrases, he can read 90% publications. Additionally, the number of characters used in daily life is much less than in publication materials.
Therefore, to achieve survival and communication in Chinese phrases are the easiest way to master characters. For this part, Chinese is easier than English.

(1) Regular Chinese Character Course Classes

Regular Chinese character course classes focus on daily-used communicating characters. For example, characters used for emails, street directions, books, website characters etc. According to Chinese level, we separate classes into three classes, which are pre-elementary level class, elementary level class and intermediate level class.
